APPLEBY HORSE FAIR 2008

The Youth Service received a last minute call to come and help at the Appleby Horse Fair, the annual festival which over the past four centuries has drawn Travellers from across England and Europe. Two young mothers from the Travelling Community stepped out in faith, and decided to set up a prayer tent in the middle of all the chaos, to bring God back into the heart of things. It was an amazing experience with lots of children, young families and many not so young, coming to the tent for Mass, for the healing service, to hear the testimonies of some of the Travellers, and for the all night vigil. Bishop Patrick commented that the ‘Appleby Fair 2008 was a marvellous event and I was blessed to be present for the weekend. This year’, he said, ‘for the first time, thanks to tremendous leadership from amongst the Travelling community themselves, there was a real, tangible Catholic presence at the Fair and it would be my hope that this should be an annual celebration.’
